UKRAINE
Despite the brutality of the Russian attack on Ukraine, interpretations of the causes of the war vary widely. In the West, Russia is condemned for mounting an inhumane war of aggression against an independent neighbouring state. On the other hand, Putin claims that Russia is defending itself against threats from the expansion of NATO.
The disparity between these interpretations has worldwide implications. Outside of NATO and Russia, most countries have not taken a clear stance. It is important to understand why perceptions of the war in Ukraine diverge in different countries.
