At the heart of so many long standing conflicts are issues of competing national identity. Opposing political goals bring communities into conflict – but ultimately those can be negotiated. It’s harder to reconcile cultural conflict. In Northern Ireland, music, and musical celebrations play a huge part in reinforcing the cultural identity of nationalists and unionists.
